Ravens pick up wide receiver Anquan Boldin

On  the first day of free agency week, the Ravens wasted no time in squashing one rumor that has been going around the past few weeks.

No, it’s not the T.O. rumor—at least not yet.

Ozzie and crew traded their third and fourth round draft picks to acquire wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the Arizona Cardinals. He is getting a 4-year, $28 million deal. The Ravens in this deal also picked up a fifth round draft pick.

Do you think this is a good move?

Some quick facts on the 7-year veteren.

He may be known to get injured, but never anything serious. He comes with little baggage, and with the cost it took to sign him, the Ravens will be able to look into more players, as well.

Boldin, in 2009, had 84 receptions for 1,024 yards and four touchdowns.  In his career, Boldin had 584 receptions for 7,520 yards and 44 TD’s.

According to the ESPN website, “the Ravens have been looking to upgrade at receiver for several years now, and Boldin certainly fits the bill. There isn’t any word yet on whether he’ll ink a long-term deal with the Ravens, but he should provide an instant upgrade to their Joe Flacco-led passing attack.”

Boldin will catch, run and be a dirty player for Flacco to look up and find this coming season. With Boldin to throw to, the Ravens have a big, physical receiver who is sure to do work for Baltimore.

What does this mean for the T.O. rumors? Personally, I think those rumors are going to fan out now after this trade agreement and the signing of Donte Stallworth in February. But who knows; the Ravens may just surprise us all.

Check out http://wnst.net for an exclusive from Anquan Boldin:

“I’m very grateful to the Ravens for stepping up and getting the deal done. I talked to Ray Lewis last year and hoped this would have happened last off-season but it didn’t. I’m glad it’s done now. It’s exciting to be part of an organization with tradition and where the fans are die-hard. I found out earlier today that the Cardinals and Ravens were working on the deal and was pumped up all day waiting for it to happen.”

You also have an awesome blog! 🙂 And yes, I do think Boldin is a good choice for you guys. Ravens need weapons for Flacco – when I was watching the Pack/Ravens games last year, there were so many balls that your receivers could have caught and did not. Boldin is a good receiver despite the injury problems.

Thanks! and yes I agree–our offense is picking up, so we need to do something about it and start working on getting yards via passing and not just relying on ray rice to run up the middle every time haha. Going to be a great season to watch and see what happens.

BOLDINMORE! We picked up a prime time receiver and didn’t have to give up that much. Ozzie and Co. did not fail once again and this is another piece to the puzzle. Hopefully we can land another FA receiver or pick someone up in the draft. We have the big fast and strong possession receiver in Boldin and the deep threat in Stallworth. Hope we can re-sign Mason. What a day for the Ravens!

    • Genna Jean Wittstadt Says:

That is exactly what I said too–that fans need to stop worrying about what ozzie is doing. He is a top GM and has always had something up his sleeves with off season—especially this off-season. Going to be interesting to see what else happens this week.

Even with this trade, I’d still like to see us to get Mason back as a #2 receiver. That way we can focus on other needs in the draft such as cornerback, TE, and a pass rusher. Also, since this is a deep draft, I’d like to see us trade down for an additional pick or two in the middle rounds. Ozzie seems to have a knack for finding talent there.

Great deal for Baltimore. You get Boldin and a pick in exchange for a few mid draft picks. Boldin can be that #1 receiver that you guys so desperately need. I mean, Derrick Mason did a great job trying to be a #1 but he’s a #2 receiver now. You guys need to sign him for at least one more year and if Mason does retire(which I think is a coinflip right now if he will or not) then those T.O. rumors will come back. I wouldn’t be surprised if T.O. signed in Baltimore or Washington for 2 years.

    • Genna Jean Wittstadt Says:

yea and as his attitude seems to have changed a bit since he’s been in buffalo I wouldn’t hate it. But I just don’t think we need him. Why don’t we have more faith in our boys? I mean look at what they have done over the past decade working with everything they have.

I think Mason will come back for at least another year or 2 also. Only time will tell. But I doubt he will go anywhere else; he is too old to get better money, but staying in Bmore he will get the respect he should get.

      • Bill Says:

Honestly, Mark Clayton has flopped. He hasnt lived up to the expectations that he was given. Doesnt mean he isnt good, he’s just in a tough spot now because Stallworth should be the slot #3 receiver and Clayton sure isnt a #2 receiver.

    • Genna Jean Wittstadt Says:

Yea, I am not sure why people got to hot and bothered about Clayton not being persued more. I mean don’t get me wrong he has a lot of talent, but is he worth it? Especially considering what the Ravens are now working with.

Also, with Mason, I feel like right now the Ravens are playing the game they did with Ray Lewis last season. Letting him know “of course we want you back but we aren’t going to tender you. Go out and see how much you are worth, we will figure it all out, but when you come back to Baltimore to discuss a contract, you will see you are most valuable here.”

I would like to see Mason back. I love D-rock, as I call him haha.

I just am interested in the draft. I am thinking they should draft a corner or TE but we will see. Again, Ozzie and co. have always had tricks up their sleeve: Baltimore needs to just have faith.
