Orioles lose to Blue Jays during opening weekend at Camden Yards

The Baltimore Orioles were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays April 9, 10 and 11 2010 during their opening weekend at home at Camden Yards.

Did this come as a surprise to fans?

Many hoped for better, especially when the Friday, April 9 game was the second time the Orioles closing pitcher Mike Gonzalez failed to close the game in the 9th inning–leaving many disgruntled fans.

But the O’s are now 1-5 for the season.

Opening day at Camden Yards 2010

They are 1-5 in their division—and have yet to face big teams like the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees.

The first game of the year against the Tampa Bay Rays ended the same way as Friday’s.

The O’s were ahead going into the 9th inning only to lose to their opponents.  Their record with the Rays is 1-2.

Today’s loss of 5-2 to the Jays in their last game against them opening weekend was another loss near the end of the game.

Kevin Millwood pitched 8 solid innings. Millwood had allowed only three hits and retired 23 of 26 Blue Jays and had two outs in the 8th.

Then a mistake by third baseman Miguel Tejada after Millwood got two strikeouts caused opportunity for the Jays to come back–which they did on the next pitch.

Jose Bautista and Alex Gonzalez of the Rays both hit homers after that and changed the outcome of the game to Toronto’s favor.

But for once, the O’s did not lose due to their bullpen as they have over the past weeks opening few games.

Fans of the game during opening weekend at Opening day were hopeful despite the 12 season losing streak–possibly going on 13 years?

Let’s hope not.

Keep the faith, Baltimore; this is Birdland.

I gave the skipper till the all star break. He may not even make it that far. Someone will take the fall.

Haha thanks for makin me the grand finale in your hairspray video.

I’m really dissapointed that they didn’t try harder to fix Gonzalez’s mechanics in spring training. Everyone knew his velocity was down and he was gettin hammered as well. Also makes me wonder if he’s hiding an injury of some sort.

      hahaha the hairspraying was priceless.

But I know. There has got to be more than meets the eye—or is that just a hope we have? Millwood is great, though, and the Os have a solid bullpen just need to learn how to use it.
