One UVA lacrosse player found dead; another charged for her death

A University of Virginia lacrosse player was found slain in her apartment on May 3.

Another UVA lacrosse player, George Huguely, was arrested earlier today and charged with first-degree murder. Huguely and Love had previously been in a relationship according to witnesses.

Huguely is from Chevy Chase, Md. and graduated from Landon School, Bethesda, Md.

Love’s roommate called police around 2:15 a.m. thinking Love had overdosed on alcohol, but when the police arrived “it was quickly apparent to them that this young lady was the victim of something far worse,”  Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told The Associated Press.

Love, who was from this area and played lacrosse at NDP, was well-known.

“Everyone is talking about it who has private school ties. It’s a national story but ties back to Maryland,” Jason Miller, a 2000 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School in Towson, said. “Everyone who went to these schools are close and it hits home whether you knew her, her family, went to one of these schools or play lacrosse.”

Miller also coaches track for Maryvale High School, one of NDP’s “sister” schools and rivals.

“Everyone today was in complete shock. They are both people from Maryland, both play lacrosse and it is all over ESPN, Yahoo…it is senseless and stupid,” said Miller.

Miller’s brother also dates Love’s best friend. He said he was “in complete shock” when his brother sent him an email about what happened.

“It is just senseless and leaves a lot of open questions—why, to such a nice girl. From what I hear, she was a very classy, nice girl,” said Miller.

The University of Virgina men’s lacrosse team is nationally ranked at #1 and the women at #4 this week. There has been no decision on what the teams plan to do for their post season NCAA tournament games.

Both Huegely and Love played in 15 games this past season and were two weeks away from graduating.

Said athletics director Craig Littlepage: “This is a close-knit department… it’s the reaction of mourning, grieving, feelings of disbelief. Asking ‘how could this happen to such a wonderful person — a person who was described as an angel?’ ”

Police spokesman Gary Pleasants said Huguely will have a bond hearing Tursday in the General District Court. The hearing can be done via teleconference without moving Huguely from the jail, Pleasants said.

The spokesman wouldn’t say how authorities connected Huguely to the murder. He said police are awaiting an autopsy of Love to determine the cause of death and will continue to gather evidence.
